The game in these posts has a new name. Everything you've read so far was built as Emberdeep; from today it's Kindlefall. Same game, same heroes, same Ember. Here's why, and what it means.
Why rename
During Sprint #2 the marketing team did the search we should have done on day one, and its first page was titled "The name problem". At least five other games already use the name Emberdeep. One is a Steam release in progress. The closest is a browser dungeon crawler on itch.io, with Knight, Rogue and Mage classes and a free-demo-then-paid model: exactly our plan. The obvious "play" domain was already registered by another browser game, and emberdeep.com has belonged to someone else since 2020.
Their point was simple. Anyone who heard "Emberdeep" and searched for it would find someone else's game first, and we'd look like the copy. And a rename would never be cheaper than right now: no store page, no press, no followers, nothing posted yet. Today it costs a logo, a few strings and a domain.
Kindlefall was their top pick. It had zero exact hits on Steam and itch, the .com was free, and it's two syllables you can spell after hearing once. We registered kindlefall.com, and it's the name.
What it means
The Kindlefall is the night the First Flame fell from the sky and burned its way down into the earth. The halls it carved as it fell are called Kindlefall too, and they're what you descend, carrying an Ember: a spark of that Flame. The name was already hiding in the game. The cult on Floor II throws kindlings at you, the superboss is the Kindled One, and "fall" is what a descent is.
So the fire stays. The Ember stays, and so do its names: the Emberbolt, Ember Rush, the Ember-born, the Ember Knight.
What changed in the game
- The logo and the title are new, and so is the last card of a finished descent.
- Floor I is now the Kindlescar: the top of the wound, where the First Flame first struck. The Bone Tyrant is now Lord of the Kindlescar. Your Codex carries its old page over to the new name, so nothing you've unlocked is lost.
- The world says the name. The portal down to the next floor announces "The Kindlefall Calls". Ser Cendric tells you what the place is, Mother Soot has kept shop in Kindlefall "since before the stairs had names", and the Codex has new pages for the Kindlefall and the Ember.
- Even the loading screen got a few new lines: "Measuring how far the First Flame fell. Still falling…"
Floor I's arrival card
The last cardThe older posts now use the new name too. Where an old screenshot or quote still shows "Emberdeep", there's a short note. It's the same game: it just has a name we can own now.
